I knew it. This movie as a standalone is pretty good. A lot of the issue with this movie are set by The Force Awakens.

I think the reason the cursed pirates seem to be hurt is because they actually are, i don't think the curse would be so forgiving as to remove all pain, theyed always be in pain due to starving and rotting which is why some damage they can just shrug off as theyre used to it but when they don't expect it its a sudden jab.

I think the biggest issue people have with the Canto Byte scenes is this: the original Star Wars trilogy was a story with a wide scope, but a simple idea. It was a story about a young man learning about himself and getting involved in a fight for freedom against oppression. Very simple, very straightforward, easy to follow and easy to get onboard with. the Prequel trilogy expanded the ideas and the world of Star Wars in a truly massive way, bringing in so many ideas about politics, culture, economy and how they all interact with the religious structures and ideals of the people, and, most importantly, how they influence and direct the characters who have the most important positions of power and authority in the galaxy. this was such a sudden change for most people who were expecting another fun and light-hearted fantasy with a dark edge, so it took a while for people to get invested with it. the poor direction from Lucas and terrible editing in most scenes didn't help, granted, but the writing itself (story-wise, not dialogue-wise) wasn't the problem. and that brings us to the Sequels. the Force Awakens reintroduced us to a simpler, more easily identifiable struggle with a more simple (even TOO simple) main character in Rey. I don't dislike this decision, for basically the same reasons you gave; I think this was really the best (maybe only) choice Disney could have made with the hand they were dealt. however, suddenly injecting all of this talk and debate about society and economy and the struggle of the oppressed and unfortunate who just want to see the world treat them more fairly, on top of the introduction of issues around war profiteering, on top of the commentary on animal cruelty and all that, is just too much too suddenly. Not only that, but it's right snack in the middle of a story that, up to this point, had been faithfully following that more streamlined narrative from the Force Awakens. if this whole movie had been about expanding the world and the ideas from the beginning, similar to what Empire did for the Force and Luke's relationship to Vader, maybe it would have worked. Point is, it was just tonal whiplash that didn't fit the established flow of the story and the world it was written in.
